Start by placing the artwork where it relates to the console and remains clearly visible above the objects you use on it. A useful first trial is a 15–25 cm gap between the console surface and the bottom of the frame, adjusted for the furniture, frame and nearby objects.
Arrange the console before the artwork
Put your normal lamp, bowl or vase in position. A tall lampshade changes the apparent balance and may cover part of the image. Decide whether that overlap is intentional. Move temporary clutter away, but keep the everyday objects that will stay.
Check the main view
An entry console is usually seen while standing; a dining-room sideboard may be seen from a chair. Test the artwork from both positions if the room serves both purposes. Avoid raising it simply because there is a large empty area above it.
Use the complete arrangement
For one work, align its centre with the console's usable composition, taking an off-centre lamp into account. For two works, centre the pair's combined footprint. Measure the gap between them as part of that footprint, not as an afterthought.
A smaller piece such as a landscape above a compact console can feel intimate and deliberate. It does not need to fill the entire wall. Leave enough space that the frame and its shadow can be read clearly.
Calculate the fixing position last
Once the paper template is right, measure from the actual frame top to the loaded hanging point or specified mounting reference. Subtract that distance from the planned top edge to locate the fixing. Do not use the product image to estimate hardware placement.
Follow the fixing manufacturer's guidance for the wall and object weight. The template settles the composition; the physical object and mounting instructions settle the installation.
