Artwork Size Versus Frame Size: Read the Dimensions

Atelier — Pearl & Oxblood, Natural float-framed canvas, portrait 12 × 18 inches; product preview.

preview of Atelier — Pearl & Oxblood in a Natural float frame, 12 × 18 inches. The outer frame adds to the nominal canvas dimensions.

Artwork size and outer frame size can be different measurements. Before ordering, identify exactly what the listed dimensions describe: the printed face, the canvas, the acrylic panel or the complete framed object.

Use numbers before labels

Words such as small, large and statement are relative. Record the width and height in a consistent unit, then note the orientation. An 18 × 12 inch landscape is not the same arrangement as a 12 × 18 inch portrait.

Convert without rounding too early

One inch equals 2.54 cm. A nominal 18 × 12 inch image is therefore 45.72 × 30.48 cm. A listing may round these values for convenience. Neither conversion tells you the added width of an external frame.

Measurement Use
Nominal image or canvas size Compare the selected artwork format
Finished outer width and height Plan the occupied wall area
Total mounted depth Check projection and clearances

For two works, include every part

Add the outside width of the first frame, the intended wall gap and the outside width of the second. Do the equivalent calculation vertically for a stacked pair. Use the actual object measurements when locating hanging points.

Ask before a close fit

If your artwork must sit inside panelling or between sconces, confirm the finished dimensions and any stated manufacturing tolerance before purchase. A room visualisation cannot establish millimetre-level fit.

Keep the selected finish, orientation and size together in your notes. This makes it easier to review the order accurately and avoids choosing the right artwork in the wrong physical format.
