Art at the end of a hallway is seen before you reach it. Choose the work for that long approach as well as the close view, and let the end wall become one clear destination rather than another crowded surface.

Start at the entrance

Stand where you first see the corridor. Note how much of the end wall is visible around door frames, furniture and open doors. A picture centred on the wall may appear off-centre from this position. Test its placement from both the entrance and the final few steps.

Noir Contour's dark curve and ivory field provide a graphic option with a clear outline. A softer landscape offers a different experience. Compare the complete composition at the distance you will usually see it; a tiny detail you love close up may disappear along the hall.

Measure the usable rectangle

Record the clear width between architraves and the space above any furniture. Include the outside frame, not just the printed image. A portrait can suit a tall narrow end wall, but a wider wall may call for a landscape. The architecture should guide the test.

Check the last step and the door swing

A corridor can finish at a cupboard or turn into another room. Walk the route carrying an everyday bag and open nearby doors fully. Include the complete mounted depth in the clearance check. Keep access to switches and storage comfortable.

Test evening light

Look again under the lighting normally used at night. A ceiling fitting may leave the end wall dark or reflect in a glossy panel. Move a temporary paper template before committing to the position; discuss any new fixed lighting with a suitable professional.

Leave the neighbouring side walls quiet during this trial. Once the end work has a clear place, decide whether another image adds something useful. The aim is a view you enjoy approaching, with safe clearances and a composition that remains interesting when you arrive.
